Fixed flange ball towbars are traditionally used in the UK for all serious forms of towing and are generally the most cost effective option.

A 50mm towball is bolted to a two or four hole plate (vehicle dependant) that also allows the fitting of a 25mm spacer so that accessories such as a towbar mounted cycle carrier can be used. Features include:

Tow and carry cycles at the same time (subject to nose load limits)
A choice of towing couplings and accessories can be fitted
AL-KO towballs can be fitted
Bumper shields can be fitted
The towing height can be adjusted on commercial and 4×4 four-hole plate towbars

Vehicle specific wiring is an innovative system that adjusts your car’s electronic aids to optimise its braking and handling characteristics for extra safe towing. It is available with all our fixed flange ball towbars.

Exclusive to Witter and only recently introduced, the detachable flange towbar offers all the versatility of a fixed flange bar whilst leaving very little of the towbar visible when detached. Features include:

Tow and carry cycles at the same time
AL-KO towballs can be fitted
Won’t trigger reversing sensors when not towing
A choice of towing couplings and accessories can be fitted
The towball is removed when not in use preserving ‘shins’

Detachable Swan Neck

Mainly used in the rest of Europe and slimmer than a flange bar, this style was the first to offer a detachable version.

Cycle carriers are available for the detachable swan neck towbar but you cannot tow at the same time. Features include:

Towball is removed when not in use preserving ‘shins’
AL-KO and other friction type stabilisers can be fitted
Won’t trigger reversing sensors when not towing
Unrestricted access to the boot

Detachable swan necks are made even more convenient when paired with vehicle specific wiring. This system adjusts your car’s electronic aids, such as ABS and suspension settings, to optimise the braking and handling characteristics for towing heavy loads.

Fixed Swan Neck

The fixed swan neck towbar is mainly used outside the UK and is the least flexible design as no additional accessories can be used. Cycle carriers are available for this type of towbar but you cannot tow at the same time.

This towbar is available with either universal or vehicle specific wiring electrics. Although universal wiring is cheaper, with vehicle specific wiring you can activate all your car’s towing related safety features as the manufacturer intended.

Swan neck towbar features include:

Less likely to trigger reversing sensors
Compatible with AL-KO stabilisers
Cannot be fitted with a bumper shield
Slightly more expensive than the flange towbar

Single Electrics

Single Electrics

Single electrics, also known as 12(N), are fitted as standard. They provide power from the towbar to the lights on a trailer or caravan. If you’re only going to be towing a trailer, this is all you’ll need.

You can tow a caravan using only single electrics but the interior functions of the caravan, such as the fridge, won’t have power to them.

Even if you will only be using the towbar for a cycle carrier, we recommend that you still have a single electric socket fitted so that you can power a light board over the bikes.

In terms of wiring, you can choose between universal and vehicle specific. To ensure that all towing related safety features activate properly as the manufacturer intended, vehicle specific wiring is the superior choice.

Twin Electrics

Twin Electrics

Twin electrics, or 12(S), are fitted in addition to single electrics and are needed if you’re going to use your towbar for towing a caravan built prior to 2008.

The extra grey socket provides power to operate the interior functions of the caravan so you can work the interior lights, run the fridge and charge the battery whilst towing.

This type of socket has been replaced on caravans built after 2008 in the UK. New caravans now use the 13 pin standard socket.

To make sure all the safety features of your car are activated whilst towing your caravan, vehicle specific wiring – rather than universal wiring – is necessary.

13 Pin Electrics

13 Pin Electrics

13 pin electrics have been standard in most other European countries for some time. This is replacing the two separate sockets previously used in the UK. The 13 pin socket is essentially the two 7 pin sockets merged into one.

All caravans manufactured in the UK from 2008 are fitted with an ISO 13 pin connector as standard. This system uses one socket with 13 pins inside, instead of the traditional two separate 7 pin sockets.

13 pin sockets are also used on some vehicles, especially with detachable towbars, when there isn’t enough room to mount two separate sockets behind the bumper.

For the safest towbar wiring, which is the way the manufacturers intend, choose vehicle specific wiring; this enables the activation of all your vehicle’s towing safety features.
